Cruz Roja's most active job is to serve as the island's
designated first responder to accidents and other
emergencies. All emergency transport and treatment is
provided without charge.

Our three ambulances operate 24 hours a day, seven days
a week and serve both residents and visitors. Our
paramedics may treat victims at the scene or transport to
any of Cozumel's public and private hospitals, clinics or
chambers. On average, we are called to 10-15 incidents
each day.

In-house emergency treatment is also available on a
walk-in basis. Our facility is equipped and staffed to  help
with many common injuries, including the setting of broken
bones.

In addition, our paramedics are stationed alongside the
lifeguards at many beaches to respond to emergencies
there. In cooperation with the city's Proteccion Civil, we are
currently training every lifeguard to become a paramedic.

Clinical Medicine
We offer low-cost medical consultations, physical exams,
lab work, and injections. A  pediatrician, dentist, and
general practitioner are available between 9:00-21:00
hours as well as trained nurses and technicians. We have
an infirmary and nursing staff for patients who need
overnight observation, treatment or recovery.

We have recently completed a tienda to provide our
patients with free prescription medicines as available.
Diabetic patients may come in daily to self-check blood
sugar with our monitors and to receive insulin.
My wife Cheryl and I recently enjoyed a week long stay in
Cozumel scuba diving the beautiful reefs. We stayed at
Scuba Club Cozumel and were impressed by how
friendly all the locals were during our short time there.
Unfortunately for us, on October 20th, our last day in
Cozumel, we rented scooters and had an accident on
the road to Punta Sur. A Mr. Leo Rodriguez witnessed
the accident and summoned emergency assistance. A
Red Cross ambulance arrived within minutes and
administered emergency first aid along with transporting
my wife and I to the Clinica San Miguel for further
medical evaluation and treatment.

Nanette and Teresa were the Red Cross attendants who
treated us on the scene and accompanied us to the
Clinic. We were extremely impressed with their
professionalism and compassion. We felt incredibly
fortunate to have them administering treatment on the
scene. It is our good fortune as well that our injuries were
minor, it could have been much worse.

We wanted to make sure to pass on our heartfelt
appreciation for the incredible jobs both Nanette and
Teresa did for us that day.
